Institute Staff

The Institute's staff is a group of seasoned professionals with substantial health care expertise. 

 

Scott J. Rein ~ President

Scott J. Rein is the founder and President of the Institute for Western Surgery. Mr. Rein is known as a health care industry expert and speaks regularly at health care conferences; has consulted for major academic hospitals; worked with hundreds of surgeons throughout the United States; and has developed and managed the most successful surgical facilities in the United States under a business model that emphasized patient satisfaction and outstanding health care.

Mr. Rein is also the founder and President of U.S. based Strategic Outpatient Solutions. Under Mr. Rein’s leadership, Strategic Outpatient Solutions created, developed and managed the Urgent Orthopedic Program for the United States Olympic Committee (“USOC”). Strategic Outpatient Solutions deployed an American surgical team in Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games, providing emergency surgical services for U.S. athletes and the USOC delegation. Mr. Rein has been studying the Chinese surgical market and interviewing dozens of international and Chinese hospitals; surgeons and surgical companies active in China for more than 6 years and the Institute is the solution developed by Mr. Rein for the issues he discovered with the surgical options currently available in China.

David Jones, BSc, MHSc ~ Clinical Director

After completing an undergraduate degree in clinical sciences Dr. David Jones completed his post-graduate training in osteopathic medicine and rehabilitation medicine at Victoria University in Melbourne Australia. Before coming to Shanghai Dr. Jones worked in clinical practice in both Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia. During this time Dr. Jones also worked in tertiary education, spending five years lecturing in health sciences. Dr. Jones relocated to Shanghai in 2007 where he was the Chairman of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at one of China's largest international hospitals. For the past two years Dr. Jones has also been the Chief of Rehabilitation for the International European Masters Golf Tournament in China. He is also a qualified medical professional with the Titlist Golf Performance Institute. Currently Dr. Jones is the Clinical Director at the Institute for Western Surgery. Clinically Dr. Jones focuses on rehabilitative treatment for patients suffering from back pain, neck pain, knee and shoulder pain related to sporting injuries. Dr. Jones also has a special interest in treating symptoms related to vertebral discs injuries (sciatic pain, leg pain or arm pain).

Lauren Brown ~ Finance Director

Lauren Brown’s expertise is in finance and revenue cycle management. She began her career in public accounting providing assurance and advisory services to clients in a variety of industries. Until spring 2008, Ms. Brown managed the revenue cycle and financial analysis functions for five of the most profitable health care facilities in the United States with an emphasis on monitoring key performance indicators, analyzing trends and recommending business strategies.

Wendy Chen, Director

Until returning recently to her native home of Guangzhou to work at the Institute for Western Surgery, Wendy Chen lived in the United States for more than 15 years. Ms. Chen earned her undergraduate degree at the University of California at Irvine. She is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Randy Chee, Director

Randy Chee is originally from Los Angeles and has spent the past seventeen years living in Hong Kong and Singapore.  He has worked for several well-known global brands and held senior roles in the areas of business development, finance, partnership marketing, and account management.  His knowledge and experience of Asia provides Mr. Chee the unique ability to understand the dynamics of this region.

Seth Kalhagen, Marketing Associate

Seth Kalhagen is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota and has spent a considerable amount of time traveling and living in different parts of Asia. He has a Bachelors Degree in Global Studies with a background in sales and pharmacy.  Seth has lead medical missions to the Mt. Everest region of Nepal and is an avid volunteer with the English clubs and orphanages in the community.  His experience of living and working in Asia provides him with the ability to understand cultural dynamics and allow him to communicate effectively.

Olivia Li, Associate

Olivia Li is a Guangzhou native who spent more than ten years abroad studying and working in the United Kingdom. As an expatriate living in London, she gained an acute awareness of the challenges of navigating life while living away from home. Ms. Li is a graduate of the University of London and holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a master’s degree in Business Information Systems. She is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

INSTITUTE ATHLETIC TRAINERS & REHABILITATION SPECIALISTS

Christina Haupt, M.S., ATC ~ Athletic Trainer, Shanghai

Christina Haupt earned her bachelors degree from Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining the Institute in 2010, Christina spent two years at the University of South Carolina (USC) where she received her Master’s degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in athletic training. Christina’s career has been balanced by athletic training and clinical experience. Christina has also worked at the sports medicine clinic with the USC sports medicine team orthopedic surgeons. She has also served as an athletic trainer for the USC Men’s and Women’s cross country and track and field teams and for several U.S. high schools.

Stephanie Osmer, M.S., ATC ~ Athletic Trainer, Shanghai

Stephanie Osmer did her undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and obtained her masters degree at San Jose State University in California.  For the last two years she has served as a graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Stanford University working primarily with the national championship gymnastics team.

 

 

Katie Mathews, M.S., ATC ~ Athletic Trainer & Rehabilitation Expert, Guangzhou

Katie Mathews earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology & Athletic Training from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and her Master of Science in Athletic Training from Michigan State University.  Katie has provided athletic training coverage at both the collegiate and high school level.  Katie also has extensive experience in physical therapy and orthopedic evaluations having spent the the year prior to joining the Institute working full time at Cumberland Memorial Hospital as a rehabilitation specialist while also providing athletic training coverage at two local high schools.

 

Heath Duncan, ATC ~ Athletic Trainer & Rehabilitation Expert, Guangzhou

Heath Duncan, ATC is an experienced athletic trainer at the Institute for Western Surgery and is the Institute's primary athletic trainer for the American International School of Guangzhou. Heath received Bachelor’s degrees from East Carolina University in Athletic Training and School Health Education. He is also a licensed Health and P.E. teacher.  Heath has worked with many high school, collegiate, and professional teams in the United States, including the National Football League, where he worked as an athletic trainer for the Atlanta Falcons and the Cleveland Browns.
